The square in a square quilt block is a simple quilting unit.
This version is made using a center square and 4 squares to create the corner triangles.
Using this method makes the block both easy to make and very accurate.
SQUARE IN A SQUARE QUILT BLOCK
The square in a square is a great building block to use in other quilt blocks.
For an example of this, see the Indiana Puzzle block. The center square of that block is a square in a square.
It can also be used as a block all on its own.
The center square is a great place to showcase fabric, so fussy-cutting pieces is a fun way to frame your favorite parts of the print.
It would also be a good block to try mixed media and embroider in the center square.
For those wondering, the fabric line I used is called Perfect Union from Edita Sitar by Laundry Basket Quilts.
I have used it to create the Celtic twist quilt block.
Next week, I'll be doing another variation of the square in a square.
It's called the economy block.
I use a different method to piece it together.
AND the squares build on each other. It's more like a square in a square in a square.
It's a pretty cool block, so stay tuned.

Begin by drawing a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back side of each small square.
Place two blue squares on opposite corners of the cream square with right sides together.
Orient the squares so that the drawn lines are parallel to each other.
Sew along the lines.
Trim 1/4 inch from the seam. Press open.
Place the remaining blue squares on the remaining corners of the cream square with right sides together.
Again, orient the squares so the drawn lines are parallel to each other.
Sew along the lines.
