This healthy homemade granola recipe has just 6 simple ingredients. You can add in seeds, nuts or fruit if desired.My philosophy is that homemade is almost always healthier than store-bought.
And that is a step in the right direction, even if I don't use 'premium' ingredients.
For me, there has to be a balance between healthy and affordable.
This recipe uses basic pantry ingredients that I always have on hand.
- old fashioned oats
- cinnamon
- salt
- maple syrup
- vegetable oil
- vanilla extract
- add-in's, optional
Oats
Old fashioned oats are sometimes called rolled oats. Do not use quick oats for this recipe.Maple syrup
The healthiest option for syrup is to use real maple syrup. However, I don't really keep that on hand, so I know from experience that using cheap syrup will work. Don't overthink it. Just use what you have. Vegetable Oil
I use vegetable oil, or sometimes canola oil. For a healthier version you could use coconut oil.Add Ins
My kids don't like nuts in their granola. So I keep it simple and make it without.If you like nuts, you can omit 1/2 cup of the oats and add 3/4 cup of nuts. Sliced almonds or chopped pecans are yummy options.
Other delicious add in's are sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, dried fruit, flax seeds, chia seeds, or unsweetened coconut flakes. Use the same ratio as above. Remove 1/2 cup of the oats and add 3/4 cup of the add in's.

HOW TO MAKE GRANOLA AT HOME
This basic granola is so easy to make! It is my go-to granola recipe. It comes together so quickly.In a large bowl, add all of the ingredients.
Mix with a wooden spoon until all the oats are coated with the oil and syrup.
Spray a baking sheet generously with cooking spray.
Spread the granola mixture evenly on the pan.
Bake at 300 for 20 minutes.
With a metal spatula, scoop the granola and flip it over.
Bake granola for another 10 minutes. The edges will begin to be a light golden brown color.
Remove from oven and let the granola cool completely.
Once cool, scoop granola into a container for storage.

HOW LONG DOES HOMEMADE GRANOLA LAST
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a month. I generally use a mason jar or similar glass jar. But you could use plastic food storage container or even a zip top bag.
For longer storage, freeze it for up to six months.
