SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR A DIY FLEECE BLANKET
- fleece (yardage guidelines below)
- rotary cutter, straight edge ruler and cutting mat, OR scissors and ruler
- masking tape (helpful, but not required)
If you don't have a rotary cutter and mat, don't worry. You can make this easily with sharp scissors and a ruler.
How much fleece should you buy? Here's my suggestions:
Baby blanket - 1 yard (to make 2 blankets that are approx. 28-30 X 36 inches) Child blanket - 1 1/2 yard Teen/Adult blanket - 2 yards
HOW TO MAKE AN EASY FLEECE BLANKET WITH A TRIANGLE EDGE
The first step is to prepare the fabric. Honestly there is not much to prepare.First I like to square up the fabric - just make sure the edges are cut straight.
Next, cut off the selvage edges. This is the edge that has the manufacturer's info on it. Simply cut it off and discard.
Fold the fabric in half, this way you can cut through two layers at once, cutting the time to make it in half.
Cut a two inch square from each end.
Next make a cut every two inches along the edge of the fabric. The cut should be one inch deep.
Tip: I like to use a piece of masking tape to mark the depth that I need to cut. It's also handy to write marks every two inches. Then you can simply transfer the tape to the next section of blanket as you work.
Next, cut each rectangle into a triangle. Starting at the center point of the strip, make a diagonal cut toward the top edge of the cut. Repeat in the opposite direction to form a triangle point.
I like to complete a section at a time and them move the tape down and work on the next section.
Once one side of the blanket is complete, fold the blanket in the opposite direction and continue the process on the remaining sides.
