Make this EASY uneven nine patch quilt block. This block is perfect for beginners!
This is a variation of the classic 9-patch block
The construction is the same.
The difference is that the size of the pieces are not the same as in a traditional nine patch.
The center square is much larger, the side pieces are rectangles and the corners are smaller.
This is the last block for our Halloween table runner.
We have already made the Greek cross quilt block, the sawtooth star variation and the double monkey wrench block.

FABRIC AND SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR QUILTING
If you'd like to use the same cute Halloween fabric that I am using, it is called Meow-gical Night by Michael Davis for Wilmington Prints.I think this fabric is just so stinkin' cute.
However, since we are using traditional quilt blocks to make the table runner, you can totally use different fabrics. Any that you like or have on hand will do.
FABRIC NEEDED FOR A TABLE RUNNER PROJECT
- a layer cake (I will have plenty leftover for other projects)
- 3/4 yards black fabric
- 3/4 yard backing fabric (with one seam to form back - or 1 1/3 yard if you don't want a seam.)
- 3/4 yard batting
SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR QUILTING
Here are my basic quilting supply recommendations.- thread
- rotary cutter / cutting mat / straight edge
- sewing machine (This is my new machine that I absolutely love!)
- sewing scissors
- pencil
- iron and ironing board
FABRIC MEASUREMENTS FOR A 9" UNEVEN 9 PATCH
Here's what you need for an uneven 9 patch block:- 1) 5" square (black)
- 4) 5" X 2 3/4" (striped)
- 4) 2 3/4" squares (orange)
Want to make a different block size?
I've calculated the measurements for a 6 inch and a 12 inch block too.
HOW TO MAKE AN UNEVEN 9-PATCH QUILT BLOCK
Let's get started with the tutorial. Check out the video if you learn better that way.
This block really is so great for new quilters. But the variation of sizes gives it a little more pizazz than a regular nine-patch, so it's great for any skill level.
Place the black fabric in the center.
Add the striped rectangle pieces to each side of the black square.
Add the orange squares to the corners.
Sew together each row.
Press all seams toward the purple striped fabric. (Top and bottom rows, press toward center, middle row press away from center.)
Sew all the rows together, nesting the seams as you go. This will help the block lay nice and flat.
Press the block.
See, it's easy peasy! I hope you enjoyed making this unequal nine-patch block.
Now that we've made all the blocks for our table runner, we just need to put it together.
