A Greek cross quilt block is made up of half square triangles, strip blocks and a square. Then simply sew it together as you would a nine-patch.
This classic block is a fun one to feature a fun fabric in the center. I fussy cut the center square to showcase the cute cat in a witch's hat.
Join me as we create a fun Halloween table runner.
Each week, we'll create a different quilt block and by Halloween we will have a fun table runner.
This week we're making the Greek cross quilt block.

FABRIC AND SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR QUILTING
Let's talk fabric. You can use whatever you want to make this quilt block and table runner. You can make it seasonal as I am. Or you can use fabric you have on hand.I am absolutely in love with Meow-gical Night by Michael Davis for Wilmington Prints.
It's fun and cute. The cats are adorable and the prints all go together so well.
FABRIC NEEDED FOR A TABLE RUNNER PROJECT
- a layer cake (I will have plenty leftover for other projects)
- 3/4 yards black fabric
- 3/4 yard backing fabric (with one seam to form back - or 1 1/3 yard if you don't want a seam.)
- 3/4 yard batting
SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR QUILTING
Below are some of my favorite quilting tools. For this project a half square triangle is particularly helpful. In addition, a rotary cutter, mat and straight edge are needed.- thread
- rotary cutter / cutting mat / straight edge
- sewing machine (This is my new machine that I absolutely love!)
- sewing scissors
- pencil
- iron and ironing board
- HST Ruler
FABRIC MEASUREMENTS FOR A 9" GREEK CROSS BLOCK
Below are the measurements to cut for a nine inch block.- 1) 5 3/4" squares in orange
- 1) 5 3/4" square in cream
- 1) 3 1/2" square in cream (fussy cut)
- 2) 2" X 10" strip in purple check
- 2) 2" X 10" strip in orange
If you'd like another size, I have also calculated the measurements for a 6 inch block as well as a 12 inch block.
HOW TO MAKE A GREEK CROSS QUILT BLOCK
The Greek cross block is a variation of a nine patch block, using half square triangles, strip blocks and a simple square for the center.
I created a video. You can watch it here.

MAKING THE STRIP PIECES
Sew together a purple and orange 2" X 10" strip on the long edge. Repeat with remaining strips of fabric.Cut the strip set into 4) 3 1/2 inch sections.
MAKING THE HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES
The half-square triangles are the corner units of our block. We are using the 4-at-a-time HST method.
Select the two 5 3/4" squares.
With right sides together, sew all the way around the perimeter of the squares using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Cut the block in a diagonal line from corner to corner. Do this in both directions.
Using a Triangle Square Up Ruler, trim to 3 1/2" square.
Press open and trim tails.
ASSEMBLING THE GREEK CROSS
Now it's time to put our block together.Arrange the squares in a Greek cross pattern, with the orange half of the triangle pointing inward and the orange half of the strips facing outward, all surrounding the middle square.
Sew together each row.
Press towards the triangles on top and bottom. And press towards the middle on the middle row.
Sew together each row, nesting the seams to form perfect points.
Stay tuned, we are also making the following quilt blocks for the table runner:
