LASER CUT DESIGN
Begin by uploading the succulent plant designs into the laser cutting software.
Base the size of a design off the materials you have to cut and how large you want your finished product. Mine are 1.5 inches tall.
xTool Creative Space (XCS) is awesome software and easy to use. You can open an SVG cut file, DXF, Jpg, PNG, and more. Then use the slider to alter the size, select cut on the images, and the desired power and speed.
Duplicate the outline of the plants so it cuts the intricate top layer and the base to adhere it to.
I cut 3mm basswood at 85 power, 10 speed and 1 pass.
Tip: Do a test run to make sure these settings work with your materials.
DESIGNER PRO-TIP
Design Bundles has this free succulent laser cut files svg bundle that contains 10 different little succulents templates in a zip folder containing 7 different file types: CDR, DXF, EPS, JPG, PDF, PNG and SVG.
If you are using an xTool Laser Cutting Machine, you can open the jpg, png, SVG, or dxf files directly in XCS.
Design Bundles has FREE digital laser cut files all the time and makes crafting handmade pieces so simple.
There's a whole host of vector files, laser jewelry file images, svg laser cut creative design bundles, sublimation images, and much more.
They offer bundle deals regularly too--so you can get hundreds of files for less than 5 bucks.
If you love creating but not the software creation side, then Design Bundles is for you!
I highly recommend using a laser cutting machine with air assist to reduce scorching.
After the laser cuts out the basswood, you can gently wipe the edges of the plywood with a baby wipe to remove more of the scorch marks if desired.
COLORING THE LAYERS
Now it's time to color these little succulent cuttings.
I love Tooli-Art paint pens. They are the best quality paint pens I've ever used.
They have different size tips for full area coverage or fine tips for detail work.
These are the Tooli-Art Essential + packs. The large size box has the medium tip pens and the small box has the same colors in the extra fine tip.
Before using the pen, shake it until the ball inside moves around easily.
Then remove the lid and press down on the nib tip twice to release any air (this only needs to be done the first time you use the pen).
Then press the nib tip down on paper until the paint runs down the nib and is ready to paint.
This is where you can get as creative as an artist as you desire--add glitter, sparkles or paint all the little plant-like details.
I simply colored the succulent pots flower pot base piece one solid color.
If you want to get more creative, you can color the flower pot a different color than the succulents on top to create an original design.
Finish off the coloring process by using the smaller Tooli-Art pens for the details of the top layer of basswood.
GLUING THE LAYERS
Once satisfied with the coloring of the cactus, glue the layers together with MONO Liquid Glue or something similar.
Go lightly on the glue, or spread it around with your finger so it doesn't squish out the edges when pressed onto the base piece.
I set a book on top of my layered laser cut pieces while the glue dried to make sure it dries flat.
ADHERING THE MAGNETS
Finally, after the layered wood succulent pieces are secure and dry, it's time to turn them into magnets.Just add a little dab of E6000 or similar adhesive to the back of a magnet and then stick it to the back of the succulent cut out.
Place the magnet near the top of the succulent so the magnet will stay right side up and strong enough to hold notes or masterpiece works of art.
The good news--this succulent svg can be used for many other projects as well!
Scale them larger to make a 'welcome succas' door hanger cactus sign. Scale them smaller for terrarium earring size.
Don't waste any of your wood! You can cut a large design on your basswood blank, then scale down the svg and cut succulent magnets, then finish off the basswood by filling the empty places with earring size cactus.
These would make great products for small businesses, etsy sellers or facebook group marketplace sellers.
These little magnets are great for handmade gifts or becoming vintage treasures--Mother's day is nearly here!
The design bundles free succulent plants file also has the same 10 layered images with a little loop on them, so they can easily be made into keychains, charms, ornaments or even a mobile.
There are so many fun options with these little succulents and a laser cutting machine. If you don't have a home laser cutting machine yet, check out this post!
These cute laser cut succulent magnets are the perfect spring decor for a fridge or a locker.
