Roast beef
You can use whatever type of roast beef lunch meat you like. I usually purchase whatever is most inexpensive. But a good quality meat like freshly sliced roast beef from the deli makes it even better. You could also use leftover prime rib or leftover roast beef for a fantastic sandwich.
Buns
You can choose from a variety of buns for your sandwich. My favorite is French steak rolls. Walmart has French rolls that are the same shape as a hoagie roll, but they are smaller. They are the perfect size for our family. Hoagie buns or bolillo rolls are other good options.Best cheese for French dip sandwiches
Traditionally a French dip doesn't have cheese on it.However, I like cheese. I think both provolone and Swiss cheese pair well with roast beef.
FRENCH DIP SANDWICH RECIPE
Let's get started with the perfect au jus gravy. You'll need just a handful of ingredients for this simple recipe. In a medium saucepan, add 3 cups of water, 4 tsp. beef bouillon (or 4 beef bouillon cubes), 1 tsp. soy sauce and 1/4 tsp. garlic powder. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Bring it to a boil and you have homemade au jus sauce in just minutes.
Once the beef broth is boiling, add the sliced roast beef and continue boiling over medium heat for a few minutes to ensure the meat gets nice and hot. (I use about a pound of lunch meat)
Slice your buns and top with a slice of provolone cheese (or whatever you prefer). Place the buns under the broiler for 1-2 minutes to toast the buns and melt the cheese.
Add slices of tender beef on top of the melted cheese. Dunk your sandwich with each bite into the savory dipping sauce.
We serve with French fries for an easy side.
That's all there is to it. It's a filling meal that the whole family loves. Plus it's so easy to make!
