Presented as a ball, the chocolate is hollow and filled with the tasty fixing of a cup of hot cocoa. To consume the hot chocolate bomb, place it in a mug, pour very hot milk on top, stir and enjoy.
Today I'm sharing a recipe for hot chocolate bombs with marshmallows.
To me, marshmallows are a must when drinking hot chocolate. I love the sweet frothiness they create as they melt into the hot milk.
So of course, marshmallows are the first thing I added when I tried my hand at creating my own chocolate bombs. I've got a lot more variations coming including Candy Cane Kiss Bombs, so stay tuned.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR HOT COCOA BOMBS WITH MARSHMALLOWS
- milk chocolate chips
- hot cocoa mix
- marshmallows
- white chocolate (for drizzle if desired)
- other add-in's if desired (I added crushed candy canes)
I also was a little unsure of how adding regular marshmallows would affect the shelf life. I think after a week or two the marshmallows would harden and not be very good.
If you are making these to use right away, then regular marshmallows would be an ok option.
I was gifting some of these, and couldn't be sure how quickly the recipient would use them, so I opted to add the itty bitty freeze dried type of marshmallows. You know, the kind that come inside the individually packaged hot cocoa mix.
Did you know you can buy just the marshmallows in the baking aisle? They are near the marshmallow fluff. Or sometimes they're in the hot cocoa aisle. My local store has not had them in stock for several months. If that's the case, you can always buy them in bulk online.
HELPFUL KITCHEN TOOLS
A silicone mold is a must. My mold creates spheres that are about 2 inches in diameter. This size is just right. Don't use a size that's larger than 2 1/2" or it won't fit in a mug. Also if it's too small, you won't have room for the fillings.HOW TO MAKE HOT CHOCOLATE BOMBS WITH MARSHMALLOWS
For tips and even more details see my original hot chocolate bombs article.Begin by melting the chocolate. I use the microwave to do this, stirring every 30 seconds. It takes 1-2 minutes to melt depending on your microwave.
Scoop a generous spoonful of chocolate into each cavity of the mold.
With the back of the spoon, spread the chocolate evenly throughout the mold. Place in the freezer for 10 minutes to harden.
While the chocolate is in the freezer, gather the filling ingredients and set a pot of water to boil on the stove. Place a plate on top of the pot.
Working quickly, remove the chocolate from the mold. Place one shell, edge side down, on the hot plate. Twist a few times to melt the edge. Set it down and add 1 tablespoon of cocoa mix and 1-2 teaspoons of marshmallows and/or other fillings.
Melt the edge of another chocolate shell, place it on top of the filled shell with the melted edges together. Smooth the section where they meet with your finger.
Repeat with remaining chocolate shells and place in the freezer for another 5-10 minutes to harden.
Drizzle with white chocolate. Top with additional marshmallows before drizzle has hardened if desired.
