A nine patch is one of the most basic quilting blocks. At it's most basic, it is nine different squares of fabric sewn together to form a larger square.

Patterns can be created with the 9 patch. Or you can keep it totally random, like I've done. These are really easy to make and perfect for beginners.

Nine patch quilt blocks can also be a compilation of smaller quilting units like the 4 patch or half square triangles. You can see an example of this with my Jacob's Ladder quilt block.

fabric
thread
rotary cutter / cutting mat / straight edge
sewing machine
sewing scissors
iron and ironing board
square quilting rulers

NINE PATCH QUILT BLOCK SIZES

There's a simple formula to create a nine patch finished block in any size you want.

Final block size + 1 1/2" ÷ 3 = individual square size
Take the desired finished size, add 1 1/2" (for seam allowances) then divide by three. This number is the size to cut out the individual squares for the nine patch. For example, if you want the final block size to be 9 inches First, add 1 1/2 inches { 9 + 1.5 = 10.5 } Then, divide that by 3 { 10.5 ÷ 3 = 3.5 } But you don't have to do the math! I've got a handy chart for the most common quilt block sizes.

HOW TO MAKE A NINE PATCH QUILT BLOCK

For this tutorial we are making a 9 inch quilt block. If you choose to make a different size, refer to the size chart above for cutting measurements.

Cut 9 pieces of fabric into 3 1/2 inch squares.

With right sides together and using 1/4 inch seam allowance, sew together each square in each row.

Press the seams. To get the block to lay flat, press the top and bottom rows with the seams toward the outside, press the middle row with the seams toward the middle.

Sew each row together, lining up the seams as you go. Press the seams flat.

Pretty easy right?!
