Making peaches and cream is really easy and simple. It's the perfect sweet treat that utilizes fresh peaches in season.
If you've never made peaches and cream before, you may be a bit intimidated.
How do you know the cream to peach ratio? Do you add sugar? I'll admit, that these were my questions.
Peaches and cream was not something I remember having growing up. Now, having a peach tree with an excess of peaches, I decided it was time to try it.
I played around with different quantities of cream and sugar and found the perfect combination. Of course, you can just wing it, but this will give you a starting point.
PEACHES AND CREAM RECIPE
It seems to me that peach season is such a short period of time. And since they're my favorite fall fruit, I try to take advantage by making lots of peach desserts.
Some of the ways I use these fresh summer peaches is to make this no-bake peach dessert, peach cobbler or peach tart.
I also add them to our breakfasts with this easy peach stuffed french toast. And I preserve them for the winter months.
But I've decided old fashioned peaches and cream is my new favorite simple summer dessert.
It's SO stinkin' easy, it satisfies my sweet tooth.
And it's healthy because there's fresh fruit in it, right?

HOW TO MAKE PEACHES AND CREAM
The process is really simple.
Choose the best peaches, ones that are perfectly ripe. Then dice or slice the peaches.
My peaches were fairly small this year, so I put two peaches in each bowl.
Sprinkle peaches with sugar. How much sugar you use partly depends on the ripeness of the peaches. It also depends on your sweet tooth.
I suggest starting with 2 teaspoons. Adjust to your liking by adding up to 2 additional teaspoons of sugar.
Obviously the less sugar you use, the more healthy the treat will be.
Pour heavy cream over the top of the peaches and sugar.
The key is to let it sit for a while. As the peaches sit in the sugar and cream, they release their juices and sweeten the cream even more.
For a more complex flavor add a dash of vanilla or almond extract.
HOW TO MAKE HEALTHY PEACHES AND CREAM
You all know that I'm NOT a health nut, so if you have more suggestions, I'd love to include them here.Because of the cream and sugar the calorie count is fairly high. Below are a few ways, I thought of to reduce the calories.
A few ways to make peaches and cream a bit more healthy:
- Use less sugar, or a sugar substitute
- Replace the heavy whipping cream with half and half or milk
I have not ever tried almond, soy or any of those other types of milk. Is there one that is thick and creamy? If so, that may be a good replacement.

For a 'healthier' option (which I took to mean less added sugar) I recommend using half (or the smallest measurement called for in the recipe) of the sugar mixed with a pinch or two of salt before adding it to the fruit. The salt helps pull out the natural juice in the fruit and has, in my experience, the tendency to make the dish sweeter than using the full amount of sugar without making it salty. With strawberries it also works faster, for some reason. I do it with all of my macerated fruit and it hasn't failed me yet! I'm the designated cook in my big southern family, we eat a lot of *insert random fruit here* with cream and/or over pound cakes and shortcakes and such when it's hot out. It is often hot out lol.
