One that doesn't call for fancy ingredients. One that we can whip up anytime, because it's made with simple ingredients that we always have on hand.
One that is versatile enough to be added to brownies or cake or anything else you need to frost. One that is yummy and quick and easy to make.
Well this chocolate frosting from scratch is the recipe you need!
Recently I was making peanut butter bars for my son's football team. Of course, they must be topped off with chocolate frosting. So I whipped up a batch of this easy frosting.
It was perfection on top of those peanut butter treats. And I had everything I needed right in my pantry. No running to the store for that elusive ingredient.
Chocolate Frosting from Scratch
Let's get started with our ingredients list first.
Ingredients needed for homemade chocolate frosting
- butter
- cocoa
- milk
- vanilla
- powdered sugar
How to Make Chocolate Frosting with Cocoa Powder
Let's begin with the butter. It needs to be soft so it can be mixed until smooth without lumps of butter.
That means it should be left out at room temperature until it gets soft. If you forget to get the butter out ahead of time, try this method to soften butter quickly.
Resist the urge to microwave it, parts of the butter will melt. (Yes, I know from experience;)
Whip the butter until smooth and creamy.
Next add the rest of the ingredients: powdered sugar, cocoa, milk and vanilla. Beat until smooth and creamy.
That's it. A quick and easy frosting recipe with ingredients you have in your pantry. Pair this frosting with brownies or cake.
How do you fix frosting that is too runny?
Mix in 1/4 c. of powdered sugar. Continue adding powdered sugar until the frosting is the desired consistency. How do you thin frosting?
What if your frosting is too thick? What then?Add 1 T. of milk and mix in. Repeat until the desired consistency is achieved.
