I kind of have a thing for keys. I've long adored projects made with keys. I've finally made myself some key art. I started off with some old keys from my Grandpa.
For this first project, I tried to pick the most unique and different looking keys. I absolutely love that little tube key in the middle towards the top! It reminds me of a handcuff key. Since my husband's a police officer I just had to include it.
I took some fabric leftover from the Suit Jacket and Skirt I made my daughter. I hot glued the fabric around the glass that was in the frame. I was going to do burlap, but when I was looking through my stash I saw this and I'm loving how it looks.
Once the fabric was in place, I arranged the keys, moving them around until I liked how they looked. Then I simply hot glued them in place.
I can't decide which way to display them, horizontally or vertically. What do you think?
This next one is very special, since it was one of the original keys to my Grandpa's house.
I think these frames that I picked up at a yard sale for 75 cents each are just perfect.
As I was putting these together, my husband came over and said, why don't you try and fit as many as you can in the space. So since I still had plenty of keys left, I did. Here's the result:
Too bad I didn't have another frame like the ones above to match.
Have you made anything using keys? Which frame is your favorite?

Rachel,
ReplyDeleteThis is such a neat idea! That key from your Grandfather...wow! How special is that?! Those frames do look fabulous. I can't believe you got them for 75cents. I like the framed keys the best, all nicely spaced apart. I think I like them best vertical. That's a hard choice b/c it looks great both ways. I never thought of saving keys, so I don't have any. In high school I did think that I would start this new fad of WEARING keys as earrings, but it never really caught on. I can't imagine why!! :D Keys are pretty heavy too! :)
I love this! I put together a curiosity cabinet display every year for Halloween - this is perfect for it!
